“Membros do Epica se juntam ao Metal Factory!

Coen e Rob estarão trabalhando como professores para a primeira escola oficial de metal do mundo, chamada Metal Factory.

Metal Factory terá um programa educacional de três anos à músicos que querem trabalhar como profissionais no meio musical (metal). O programa contém intensos treinos de habilidade, teoria musical, gestão, educação técnica e muito mais!

Coen e Rob começarão em setembro com colegas como Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation), Stef Broks (Textures), Danny Tunker (Aborted, God Dethroned), Joost van den Broek (ex-After Forever) e outros. Audições para estudantes serão em junho!

“Simone e seu parceiro de longa data, Oliver Palotai (Kamelot, Sons of Seasons), estão esperando o seu primeiro filho que deverá nascer  por volta do final do verão. Para assegurar a melhor gravidez possível considerando a saúde de Simone e do bebê, nós decidimos parar nossas atividades a partir de primeiro de Julho. Isso implica dizer que o Epica não tocará este ano no Masters of Rock Festival na República Tcheca. Por outro lado, isto não quer dizer que o Epica não vai fazer nada! Nosso DVD ao vivo, o RETROSPECT, será lançado em breve. Mais adiante, durante a segunda metade de 2013 o Epica vai iniciar as gravações de seu novo disco, que será lançado em 2014. Estamos ansiosos para ver vocês nos shows restantes este ano, e voltaremos no próximo ano com um novo CD, mais forte que nunca!”

1 – Oi, Simone! Como você está? O que você está esperando do Retrospect?

S: O Retrospect será GRANDE!

2 – Você tem algum “ritual” antes de entrar no palco?

S: Me vestir, ouvir música e fazer meu cabelo e maquiagem.

3 – Que música você geralmente escuta antes de entrar no palco?

S: Uma combinação de tudo, somente Epica quando preciso checar as letras novamente! (risos)

4 – Simone, quando você está triste, o que você faz para fazer esse sentimento desaparecer?

S: Pensar em coisas positivas. Amigos, família, natureza, boas comidas etc.

5 – Você gostou do filme Black Swan (Cisne Negro)?

S: Sim.

I arrived around 15:30 at the Klokgebouw door after a 20 min walking in the snow. It was really cold, but, in the Netherlands, it is not usual to take cabs, and a 20 min walk is something very normal, and everyone does, when not on foot, by bicycle. Maybe because the landscapes are, mostly, flat. I noticed that the line was small and, due to intense cold, we went to an coffee shop nearby until it was time to the gates to open. I came back about 17:00 and the queue was already a little bigger. Promptly at 18:00 the gates opened for the VIP ticket line, and, to my surprise, everyone was lined up just right, with no yelling, no pushing, no running. Upon arriving, we got a closet to store all our coats, scarves, gloves and burrows that we were wearing, so we would not fell hot in the concert. Around 18:30 I walked into the venue. I was amazed because there were still places on the grid, even though it was by the side, and I comfortably installed there. I confess I expected a bigger stage and production, Brazil’s Via Funchal was best and bigger (both in capacity, and stage size) than Klokgebouw.

I stayed for about 1 hour and 30 minutes waiting for the show to begin, and, during that time, a video with testimonials from several people who have worked or did tour with Epica was playing and, among them, Amanda Somerville, who explained why not attend the show. Others were wishing congratulations. Some songs of The Score were playing, in the background. The songs had quite a new arrangement, which gave a “sad” ambiance. At 20:30 the show began with a totally new and very beautiful intro. I was already preparing myself to be crushed against the grid, because the house was crowded, but nothing happened and the audience remained motionless, watching. And so it went throughout the show. People do not sing the songs and are not that excited. They just stood there, watching. Many people even were wearing earplugs (It’s not common in Brazil, but here its kind of a thing. I think we should use that in Brazil as well. )

After the intro, they started playing Monopoly on Truth. The presentation was perfect. The whole band had a very good energy, it doesn’t even looked that they had spent the entire night making final preparations for the show, in the day before. It was clear that
everyone was very happy to be there. They followed up with Sensorium, which was certain that they would play. I thought the public would interact a little more, but no, people was just looking and I started to feel a little displaced, because of it.. It was one of the best performances of this song I’ve ever watched.

In this moment, Simone stopped to talk a bit with the audience and thank, in multiple languages. I Missed an “Obrigado”, but let it pass.

The next was Unleashed. They started with a very different intro, but then I realized that the version of the song was the one released on “This Is the Time” single. The pyrotechnic effects became more present, and the song was sung with great emotion by Simone. After this song, she loosened up and became more agitated and began real headbanging.

Followed by Martyr of the Free Word. To watch this song with a choir and orchestra is a unique sensation. Indescribable. The guitar solo was also very good, even if short. Simone stopped again to talk to the audience and spoke a little of what happened during the 10 years of the band.

The next was Chasing the Dragon. Production people came and hung two long cloths on the roof, and two performers from Cirque du Soleil came together and began their performance, along the music. Simone sang the song with much emotion. It was one of the highest points of the show. Very exciting, hard to hold back tears. I think, for her and for all the band, it was hard too. It was the best presentation I’ve seen this song, until today.

They presented the orchestra, the choir, and played Presto, cover of Vivaldi, as played in The Classical Conspiracy.

Next was Never Enough, which they don’t normally play. They somewhat changed the arrangement of the song, which for me was very good, as it has made it heavier.

They played Stabat Mater Dolorosa, cover of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. At this point, Simone called Floor Jansen to join her. The presentation was beautiful.

One of the surprises of the night was Twin Flames. It was the first time that this song was played. I confess that I prefer nostalgia, but the presentation was spectacular, so it was fine.

Every time, when any member of the band came close to where we were, and they saw our Brazilian flags, they waved with a look of surprise and a sign of approval.

Simone made several costume changes throughout the show and I could not tell in which music they were.

The next song was dedicated to Simon Oberender, friend and co-worker of the band who died in September last year. Serenade of Self Destruction. The pyrotechnics, the orchestra and choir gave a grandeur to the music, and this was the best presentation of it until today. It was interpreted by the whole band with a lot of emotion and it was one of the highest points of the show.

In this moment, the band left the stage, and the intro for Feint began, only with the orchestra. I thought they would come in and sing the song, but what followed was a breathtaking medley of orchestral and choral that featured a lot of songs. Feint, Fools of Damnation, Mother of Light, Kingdom of Heaven, Run for a Fall and Deep Water Horizon. It gave me a lump in my throat and it was one of the most exciting moments of the show, but I confess that I was not prepared for what would come after the medley, which, in my opinion, was the best moment of the show! They amended the medley with The Divine Conspiracy. I thought she would only do part of the medley too, but no. After the intro the band came in and started playing. At this very moment, I had no reaction. It was a very exciting moment. This song was only played twice, and now, for the first time, being played the way it deserves, with an orchestra and a choir. Impossible to describe the emotion. Only being there to understand. They alter the music in a way to make it smaller, but it was spectacular. A tear dropped. It would have been worthwhile to have come from Brazil to the Netherlands just for this very moment.

After recovering our breath, they played Delirium, another exciting moment of the show.

They played Blank Infinity which is always good and very exciting.

The Obsessive Devotion was next. The choir and the orchestra gave a very good atmosphere for the music.

Later, the biggest surprise of the night: Retrospect. A new music, specially composed for the celebration of the 10th year of the band. The music is heavy and has a remarkable chorus. I hope they release it as a single!

One more moment for the orchestra and choir with Battle of the Heroes (John Williams cover) and a medley of Star Wars: The Imperial March.

At this point, Arien, Isaac and Rob left the stage and gave rise to Yves Huts, Jeroen Simons and Ad Sluijter. The song was Quietus. They were really in the same page with the rest of the band and it was very good, as if they had never left. It was a great moment that brought a great nostalgia and a lot of memories. Arien, Isaac and Rob came back on stage and then they began playing The Phantom Agony, the liveliest version. In the chorus, disco lights started to flash, giving it a more cheerful and relaxed atmosphere of the song, as usual.

The band went out for a moment and came back playing Cry for the Moon, the longer version we’ve seen on several tours. With audience participation and an overwhelming drum solo by Arien, the Beast! I’m still amazed at his talent.

They Continued with Sancta Terra, where Floor Jansen returned to the stage to share vocals with Simone.

Followed with Design Your Universe, which, along with The Divine Conspiracy, was one of the best songs of the show. The choir and the orchestra had the same effect on TDC, the grandeur of the music increased in 300%, especially in the chorus.

After DYU, the band went out and only Coen came back to thank, again, the whole audience, of all countries. He quoted, primarily, Brazil! And, in this very moment, he announced what we all, deep down, already knew: The show was being recorded for a future DVD!

The band returned for the final part of the show and played Storm the Sorrow, where some pyrotechnics were used, which were very good and captured well the song’s mood.

And then came the saddest part of the show: The end. They started playing Consign to Oblivion, and, not necessary to mention, was the best presentation of this music ever. Again there are no words to describe the emotion that the music could convey to all present. Definitely this was the best Epica concert ever. It was an unforgettable experience to be present. The three hours passed like 10 minutes. The whole band was very happy and excited and delivered us a flawless show. The only slightly negative thing was the public performance. That was my first show in Europe, and the public is kinda dead. Nobody sings, or shakes, just sit there watching. That’s why the bands always like Latin-American public. I await the day that the band will record a DVD in Brazil!

I would like to thank all the Epica members, for hosting us, even during the rush of the tests and rehearsals. Also thank all of the staff, for being very helpful and considerate.

It was well worth to have traveled from Brazil to the Netherlands, so we were able to experience this show. This was the best show of my life. I never imagined that I would be there to see it, and I would do it all again.

Segue a minha review do Restrospect.  Aviso que é uma review de um fã, e a imparcialidade passou longe.

Cheguei por volta das 15:30 na porta do Klokgebouw, após caminhar 20 min enquanto nevava e fazia um frio muito grande, pois na Holanda, não é costume pegar táxi, e eles acham 20 min de caminhada algo muito normal e todos fazem, quando não a pé, de bicicleta.

Verifiquei que a fila estava pequena e, devido a frio intenso, procurei um estabelecimento pra tomar um café enquanto não chegava a hora de abrir os portões. Voltei por volta das 17:00 e a fila já estava um pouco maior. Pontualmente, às 18:00 os portões se abriram para o pessoal que estava com o vip ticket e, para minha surpresa, todo mundo foi em fila, certinho, sem gritaria, sem empurra empurra, sem correr. Ao chegar, fui procurar um armário para guardar todos os casacos, cachecóis, tocas e luvas que estava vestindo, para não passar calor no show. Por volta das 18:30 entrei na casa de shows, fiquei espantado pois ainda haviam locais na grade, mesmo que na lateral, fui para grade e fiquei confortavelmente instalado lá, confesso que esperava um palco e uma produção maior, o via funchal era bem melhor e maior(tanto em capacidade, quanto em tamanho do palco) do que o Klokgebouw.

Fiquei por cerca de 1 hora e 30 min aguardando o show começar, e, durante esse tempo, estava passando um vídeo com depoimentos de várias pessoas que já trabalharam ou fizeram tour com o Epica, dentre elas, Amanda Somerville, que explicaram o motivo de não comparecerem ao show. Outras estavam desejando parabéns. Ao fundo estavam tocando algumas músicas do The Score com um novo arranjo o que dava um ar bem “triste”.

As oito em ponto o show começa, com uma intro totalmente nova e muito bonita. Eu já estava me preparando para ser esmagado contra a grade, afinal a casa estava lotada, porém nada ocorreu e o publico se manteve imóvel, assistindo. E assim se seguiu, durante todo o show. As pessoas não cantavam as músicas, não se empolgavam tanto, apenas estavam ali, assistindo. Muitas pessoas, inclusive, estavam usando protetores de ouvido.

Após a intro, começaram a tocar Monopoly on Truth. A apresentação foi perfeita. A banda toda com uma energia muito boa, nem parecia que, no dia anterior, passaram a madrugada toda fazendo os últimos preparativos para o show. Estava claro que todos estavam muito felizes por estarem ali.

Seguiram com Sensorium, que era certa que iriam tocar. Pensei que o publico animaria mais um pouquinho, mas nada, povo parado, comecei a me sentir um pouco deslocado. Foi uma das melhores apresentações dessa música que eu já assisti.

Nesse momento, Simone parou para falar um pouco com o publico e agradecer, em vários idiomas. Faltou um “obrigado”, mas deixei passar.

A próxima foi Unleashed. Começaram com uma intro bem diferente, mas depois percebi que era a versão da música lançada no single This Is the Time. Os efeitos de pirotecnia se fizeram mais presentes aqui, e a música foi cantada com muita emoção, pela Simone. Após essa música, ela se soltou muito mais e agitou bastante e começou a bangear de verdade.

Seguiram com Martyr of the Free Word. Assistir a essa música com coral e orquestra é uma sensação unica. Indescritível. O solo de guitarra também foi muito bom, mesmo que curto. Simone parou novamente para falar com a platéia e falou um pouco do que ocorreu durante os 10 anos da banda.

A próxima, foi Chasing the Dragon. Neste momento, pessoas da produção entraram e penduraram dois panos no teto, e duas artistas do Cirque du Soleil entraram e começaram sua performace junto a música. Simone cantou a música com muita emoção. Foi um dos pontos mais altos do show. Muito emocionante, difícil de segurar as lágrimas. Creio que, pra ela e pra todos da banda, também. Foi a melhor apresentação dessa música que já vi até hoje.

Eles apresentaram a orquestra, o coral, e tocaram a música Presto, cover do Vivaldi, já tocada no The Classical Conspiracy.

A próxima foi Never Enough, que não é normalmente tocada. Mudaram um pouco o arranjo da música, o que pra mim foi muito bom pois melhorou e deixou a musica mais pesada.

Tocaram Stabat Mater Dolorosa, cover do Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. Neste momento, Simone chamou Floor Jansen pra se juntar a ela. A apresentação foi belíssima.

Umas das surpresas da noite foi tocarem Twin Flames. Foi a primeira vez que essa música foi tocada. Confesso que preferiria nostalgia, mas a apresentação foi espetacular, então tudo bem.

A todo momento, quando algum membro da banda chegava próximo de onde estávamos e viam a bandeira do Brasil, acenavam com uma cara de surpresa e um sinal de aprovação.

Simone fez diversas trocas de roupa durante todo o show e eu não saberia dizer em que música foi.

A próxima música foi dedicada a Simon Oberender, amigo e companheiro de trabalho da banda que faleceu em setembro do ano passado. Serenade of Self Destruction. Os efeitos pirotécnicos, a orquestra e o coral deram uma grandiosidade a música, e essa foi a melhor apresentação dela até hoje. Foi interpretada por todos da banda com muita emoção e foi um dos pontos mais altos do show.
Neste momento a banda se ausentou do palco, e começou a intro de Feint só com a orquestra. Pensei que eles entrariam e cantariam a música, mas o que se seguiu foi um medley da orquestra e do coral de tirar o fôlego que contou com as músicas Feint, Fools of Damnation, Mother of Light, Kingdom of Heaven, Run for a Fall e Deep Water Horizon. Deu um nó na garganta e foi um dos momentos mais emocionantes do show, mas confesso que eu não estava preparado para o que viria no final desse medley, que ao meu ver foi o melhor momento do show! Emendaram o medley com a música The Divine Conspiracy. Pensei que ela só faria parte do medley também, mas não, passou a intro e a banda entrou e começou a tocá-la. Nesse momento eu fiquei sem reação. Foi um momento muito emocionante. Essa música só foi tocada duas vezes, e agora, pela primeira vez, sendo tocada da forma que ela merece, com orquestra e coral. Impossível descrever a emoção em palavras. Só tendo estado lá mesmo para compreender. Alteram a música de uma forma a torná-la menor, mas ficou espetacular. Nesse momento não deu pra segurar e uma lagrima escorreu. Teria valído a pena de ter vindo do Brasil pra Holanda somente por esse momento.

Após recuperarem o folego, seguiram com delirium, outro momento emocionante do show.

Tocaram Blank Infinity que é sempre boa e muito animada.

The Obsessive Devotion foi a próxima. O coral e a orquestra deram uma atmosfera muito boa para a música.

Posteriormente, a maior surpresa da noite: Restrospect, nova musica, composta especialmente para a comemoração dos 10 anos da banda. A música é bem pesada, mas tem um refrão marcante. Espero que vire single!

Mais um momento voltado para orquestra e coral com a músicas Battle of the Heroes (cover do John Williams) e um medley já conhecido de Star Wars: The Imperial March.

A banda saiu por um momento e voltaram tocando Cry for the Moon, na versão mais longa que já vimos em várias tours. Com participação da platéia e um solo de bateria esmagador de Arien. Ainda me surpreendo com o talento dele.

Continuaram com Sancta Terra, onde Floor Jansen retornou ao palco, para dividir os vocais com Simone.

Seguiram com Design Your Universe, que, junto com The Divine Conspiracy, foi uma das melhores músicas do show. O coral e a orquestra tiveram o mesmo efeito que na TDC, aumentaram a grandiosidade da música em uns 300%, principalmente no refrão.

Após a Design, a banda saiu e somente Coen voltou, pra agradecer novamente a todo o público presente, de todos países, e citou, primeiramente, o Brasil. Neste momento, anunciou o que todos nós, no fundo, já sabíamos: O show estava sendo gravado para um futuro DVD.

A banda voltou para a parte final do show e tocaram Storm the Sorrow, aonde usaram alguns efeitos pirotécnicos, que ficaram muito bons e captaram bem o clima da música.

E, então, chegou a parte mais triste do show: O final. Começaram a tocar Consign to Oblivion, e não é nem necessário citar que foi a melhor apresentação dessa música até hoje. Novamente não há palavras para descrever a emoção que a música conseguiu transmitir para todos os presentes.

Definitivamente esse foi o melhor do show do Epica até hoje. Foi uma experiência inesquecível estar presente. As 3 horas passaram como se fossem 10 minutos. A banda inteira estava muito feliz e empolgada e nos entregou um show perfeito. A unica coisa um pouco negativa foi a atuação do público. Esse foi meu primeiro show na europa, e o publico é bem morto. Ninguém canta, nem agita, simplesmente ficam parados assistindo. Por isso as bandas sempre gostam do publico da américa latina. Aguardo pelo dia em que a banda grave um DVD em nosso país.

Gostaria de agradecer a todos os membros do Epica por nos receber, mesmo durante a correria dos ensaios. Agradecer também ao seu staff por ser muito prestativo e atencioso.

Valeu muito a pena ter viajado do Brasil para Holanda, para poder assistir esse show. Esse foi o melhor show da minha vida. Jamais imaginaria que estaria presente para ver esse momento, faria tudo novamente.
